COMMENT INVITED ON JURY SYSTEM

Staff Report, Reno-Gazette-Journal, 05-06-02

The public is invited to comment on the state's jury system during a final hearing scheduled for Friday by the Nevada Supreme Court's Jury Improvement Commission.

The public hearing will begin at 9 a.m. in the courtroom of the Nevada Supreme Court, 200 S. Carson St.

Among items being considered by all commission is eliminating all exemptions from jury duty, increasing juror pay and allowing would-be jurors to schedule when they're able to serve, according to their availability.

"The May 10 public hearing is the final public forum we will hold," said Supreme Court Justice Deborah Agosti, who co-chairs the commission with fellow Justice Bob Rose.  "We welcome the public's comments, suggestions and recommendations."

Rose said reform of Nevada's jury system could result in dramatic changes in the way jurors and prospective jurors are treated and in how evidence is presented at trials.

"A juror's time and public service should be respected," Rose said. "The courts should make every effort to streamline their processes so jurors don't feel their time has been wasted."
